“They are my life…”
This taut, moving film is based on the true story of Martha Liebermann, wealthy widow of the German impressionist painter Max Liebermann, who, in 1943 at the age of 85, faces deportation by the Gestapo as she attempts to save her husband’s precious legacy.
It’s a tale of courage and resolve as she seeks the help of a high-level resistance group to smuggle paintings out of Germany while her own fate hangs in the balance. The loyalty of her brave housekeeper, Luise, and their special relationship play a tender role in this drama.
