Beth Am espouses a commitment to others not just through action but also through advocacy. While we never endorse political parties or candidates, we do tirelessly advocate for issues and policies that affect those in need.
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” —Elie Wiesel, writer, Nobel laureate (b. 1928)
In these extraordinary times, the Pursue Justice team works to strengthen our
democracy through constructive and non-partisan civic engagement. Our safety and our values demand we stand up for our democracy. The Jewish Council for Public Affairs has just published a statement of concern about the "recent attacks on democratic norms and values." This was signed by over 100 Jewish groups, like the RAC, Dayenu, HIAS, NCJW, WRJ, J Street, and many congregations, including Beth Am. Read it here.
The main point was "History has made clear that our safety as Jews is inextricably linked with inclusive, pluralistic democracy and with the rights and safety of all people. When the rule of law and democratic norms are threatened, antisemitism invariably increases and Jews — and all communities — are made less safe."
Now is the time to contact your Senators and Representative to let them know you are against the direct assault on the principles that underpin our democracy. Use the 5 Calls App to help you give feedback to your elected representatives. The free app is available from the App store or go to https://5calls.org. First, set your location so the app can find your Senators and Representative. Then pick the issue you would like to call about. The app gives you background info and a sample call script. It will also make the call for you.
(It also has issues to call the Governor and Attorney General.)
