Beth Am Equal Start Awards Grant to Learning Home Volunteers
Since its inception in 2019, Learning Home Volunteers (LHV) has had a special relationship with Congregation Beth Am, specifically our Equal Start program. The mission of Beth Am Equal Start is to create access to high-quality early learning opportunities for all California children from birth to five years of age. Equal Start is especially focused on addressing the needs of underserved areas in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. LHV is so grateful to have many volunteers from Beth Am help with making play dough, contributing ideas for learning sessions, creating learning activities, introducing others to the LHV organization and supporting LHV through individual financial donations.
Earlier this year, the Beth Am Equal Start Committee approached Learning Home Volunteers and asked how else support might be provided. The offer came at an opportune moment as LHV has been asked by many of their families, with whom LHV works, to help provide support to enable English language learners enter kindergarten with better English skills.
As a result, Beth Am Equal Start has provided funding for a pilot program that will match English-speaking volunteers with LHV participants to help children learn English through play in their homes! The funds will allow LHV to develop the learning activities for these sessions.
After the learning activities for the English through play program are ready, LHV will be looking for volunteers willing to commit to working with a family once a week for six months. Interested in volunteering? Please reach out to equalstart-info@betham.org.
